CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF THE DOG IN REGIONAL VICTORIA
It’s not just Melbourne that will be bursting with fun, feasts and fiery dragons for Chinese New Year. Regional Victoria too will ignite with activities from martial arts, music and dance performance to child-friendly activities and more.
Largely due to the gold rush period where thousands of Chinese settled in Victoria hoping to strike it rich, there is a long and abundant history of Chinese immigration to our regional towns which has left a significant cultural mark.
From Ballarat, where what is believed to be the first English-Chinese translated newspaper was developed, to Bendigo and Ararat, where after the gold rush era many Chinese settled and set up grocery stores or fruit and vegetable-hawking businesses, there is a vibrant Chinese legacy ripe for exploration in regional Victoria over the Chinese New Year Melbourne Festival period.
